Sending Email: Opt-in Methods

Today on the DIY Marketing Guy blog, we bring you tips on

Send Emails : Opt-in Methods

It’s time to stop stuffing mail and get cyber style.

What is single opt-in email ?

This is a piece of electronic mail that a user chooses to receive. One scenario is like so.  I wish to recieve your newsletter so i input my name and email address into your ” sign  up here ” form . You then send me an email saying ” hey Diy Marketing Guy , you are now signed up to my newsletter , its time to get busy.”

And , that’s it. A typical opt-in email scenario. Not rocket science i know.

What is Double Opt-in email?

Round Two . The first part is the same

” This is a piece of electronic mail that a user chooses to receive.”

The second part is like so:

I wish to receive your newsletter so i input my name and email address into your ” sign  up here ” form .

Now here is where it changes:

You then send me an email saying ” hey Diy Marketing Guy , please click on the link in the email to ” verify ” that you want me to send emails to you” .

I then click the link and you follow up with the ” it’s time to get busy” confirmation email. Simple enough? I would say so.

How does this help me:

If you were to ever send out an email to a list  of ( double opt-in ) subscribers and one person happens to flag your message as spam.  You can show your email marketing provider proof that the recipient in-fact wanted to receive emails from you.

How do you this , you ask ?

When the subscriber clicked on the ” i want to receive emails from you” confirmation link , their ip address was recorded along with the date they chose to sign up. This is stored in your email list , in your email marketing service providers account.

Now that you have proof on your side, when a subscriber flags you mails as spam , you can contest it and preserve your email marketing rep. Wicked awesome huh

There you have it.

Chew on these fine posts.
